What is Organ Transplantation?

The process of transplanting a healthy, intact organ from a living donor or cadaver to replace an organ that is too damaged to function and can no longer be treated is called "organ transplantation".
The Florence Nightingale Hospitals Organ Transplantation Center successfully performs all applications related to organ transplantation, including multiple organ transplantation applications. Our center is shown as a reference in our country and internationally. Our Organ Transplantation Center, which carries out the necessary applications with an expert and experienced staff for organ transplantation, which is a multidisciplinary study, is among the institutions preferred by both domestic and international patients for treatment purposes due to its high success rate in transplantation applications.

Who is a Candidate for Organ Transplantation?

For patients whose organs have reached the final stages of failure, such as heart, liver and kidney failure, the only solution is organ transplantation. Patients who have successfully undergone this operation have a much higher quality of life and can return to their normal lives to a large extent.
Although there is no age limit for organ transplantation, the patient's health status is important. Every patient who meets the necessary conditions and can handle the organ transplant process is considered a suitable candidate for organ transplantation.
The patient who is a candidate for transplantation is examined in detail by specialists. Whether the patient is suitable for organ transplantation is evaluated by the organ transplant council, which operates with a multidisciplinary approach, and the decision on whether or not organ transplantation will be performed is made by this council.

What are the requirements for becoming an organ transplant donor?

There are 2 options for organ transplantation. These are:
Organ transplantation from a living donor: Contrary to the practice in the world, organ transplantation from a living donor is more common in our country. In this, superstitions or insufficient information about organ donation prevent people from donating organs. Therefore, patients waiting for an organ can only hold on to life by transplanting an organ from a living person with a suitable organ.
Organs taken from cadavers: Unlike our country, the organ source used more widely in the world is cadavers. In conscious societies, people donate organs before they die or the relatives of those who die. Therefore, the organs that patients need are mostly provided from cadavers.

Is Organ Transplantation Religiously Unacceptable?

The Presidency of Religious Affairs, in a decision published in 1980, stated that organ transplantation is the greatest favor that can be done to a person and that it is permissible for people to donate organs.

Which organs and tissues can be transplanted?

Organs:

  • Heart
  • Lung
  • Kidney
  • Liver
  • Pancreas

Who Can Donate Organs and Tissues?

There are three types of donor groups for organ transplantation. These are:
Relatives: According to the law, suitable relatives of the patient up to the fourth degree can become donors without any problems.
People with no relative relationship: The ethics committee established by the Provincial Health Directorate decides on whether people with no up to fourth degree relative relationship with the patient can become donors.
Cadavers: The most commonly used donors in the world are cadavers. After a person who has experienced brain death and whose organs are in good condition or their relatives donate organs, the cadaver's organs can be used for transplantation.
