Height extension surgery is the process of lengthening the leg bones using orthopedic surgical techniques. This surgery can be performed on individuals who are short in height due to genetic, hormonal or other health problems. During the surgery, the bones are surgically cut and gradually lengthened with the help of fixators or internal pins, depending on the method chosen. During the healing process, the bones are allowed to fuse naturally and this process is monitored with regular check-ups. Height extension surgery is a complex surgical procedure that aims to improve the person's quality of life.

In our Height Extension and Deformity Department, bow legs, functional disorders caused by inequality between legs, and short stature are successfully treated.

With surgical methods performed with external fixators, short stature and leg length differences can be corrected by shortening the long leg and lengthening the short leg. External fixators are also successfully used in the treatment of soft tissue loss and curvatures resulting from non-union in bone fractures.
Another method we use in our department is surgeries using motorized intra-medullary nails, which is the current method of lengthening.

Why is Limb Extension Surgery Performed?

Height extension surgery is performed when short height negatively affects a person's psychological, social and physical life. It can also be applied in cases such as some genetic disorders and premature closure of growth plates.

What are the Limb Extension Surgery Methods?

Ilizarov Lengthening Technique (Ilizarov Circular Fixator) The Ilizarov method is a technique in which a metal frame is placed around the leg bones in the shape of a circle. This frame provides lengthening by means of wires and nails attached to the bones. This method has been used for many years and has a high success rate. Combined Lengthening Technique (LON: Lengthening Over Nails) In the LON technique, a combination of an internal nail and an external fixator is used. First, the bone is lengthened with the help of the external fixator, then the internal nail provides fixation of the bones. Motorized Nail Lengthening Technique (Precise Intramedullary) The Precice system uses a motorized nail that can be controlled by remote control. This nail is inserted into the inside of the bones and the bones are lengthened by external commands. Precice Stryde Height Extension Technique Precice Stryde is a more advanced version of Precice technology. It offers a more durable and faster healing process. This system can also be controlled by remote control. Holyfix Lengthening Technique Holyfix is a minimally invasive external fixation method. This technique offers less pain and a faster recovery time. The Holyfix system works with a special device that is placed on the outside of the bones.

How is Limb Extension Surgery Performed?

Height extension surgery starts with cutting the bones (osteotomy). Then, fixators or nails are placed according to the chosen method. During the natural healing process of the bones, the bones are lengthened with the help of devices.

What are the tests required before surgery?

Before the surgery, a detailed health screening, imaging methods such as X-ray and MRI, blood tests and general health assessment are performed.

How Long Does Limb Lengthening Surgery Take?

The surgery itself usually takes 2-3 hours. However, the bone lengthening and healing process can take months. Usually, 6-9 months are required.

Who Can Have Limb Extension Surgery?

Limb lengthening surgery is suitable for adults and growing children who are in good general health and whose growth plates have closed. However, a doctor's evaluation is essential.

How Long Is the Recovery Time for Limb Lengthening Surgery?

The recovery period varies depending on the technique used. It usually varies between 6-9 months. During this period, regular physical therapy and check-ups are necessary.

Things to Consider Before Limb Extension Surgery

It is important to quit smoking and alcohol use, optimize general health status, and complete necessary tests before surgery.

Things to Consider After Limb Extension Surgery

Since limb lengthening surgery is a serious surgical procedure, there are many important points to consider beforehand. We can list the things to consider before surgery as follows:

  • General Health Status: It is important that your general health status is good before the surgery. If you have chronic diseases, you should share this with your doctor.
  • Smoking and Alcohol Use: Smoking and alcohol use can negatively affect the healing process. These habits should be avoided before and after surgery.
  • Nutrition and Diet: A healthy and balanced diet will help your body respond better to surgery and the healing process. A diet rich in protein, vitamins and minerals should be preferred.
  • Psychological Preparation: The surgical process and the post-operative period can be psychologically challenging. It may be beneficial to meet with a psychologist or counselor before the surgery.
  • Detailed Tests: Before the surgery, you need to have the detailed tests your doctor requests (blood tests, x-ray, MRI, etc.). These tests are important for planning the surgery and determining possible complications in advance.
  • Medication Use: If you are taking any medications regularly, you should share them with your doctor. Some medications may need to be stopped before surgery.
  • Physical Preparation: It may be beneficial to do exercises recommended by your doctor to strengthen your muscles and joints before the surgery.
  • Surgery Planning: A clear plan should be made regarding the hospital, surgeon and date of surgery. Also, necessary arrangements for post-operative care should be made in advance.
  • Getting Support: You may need support from your family members or loved ones for the post-operative care process. You should create a support system that can help you during this process.
  • Information and Consent: You should receive detailed information from your doctor about the risks, complications, and expectations of the surgery. You will also need to sign the necessary consent form for the surgery.

By paying attention to these points before limb lengthening surgery, you can go through the surgery and recovery period more healthily and smoothly.

Risks and Complications of Limb Extension Surgery

There are risks such as infection, bone nonunion, device complications and neurovascular injuries.

How Much Height Gain Can Be Expected After Surgery?

After surgery, a height increase of 5-8 cm is usually expected. However, with some techniques, an increase of up to 10-15 cm can be achieved.

Is There an Age Limit for Surgery?

It is usually applied to people whose growth plates have closed. In children and adolescents, the doctor's decision is important. In adults, there is no upper age limit, but general health status is taken into account.
