The final stage of IVF method is embryo transfer. The best 1-2 embryos selected from developed embryos are placed into the uterus of mother and embryos are expected to attach to inside the uterus (endometrium) to achieve pregnancy. The date of transfer is decided after evaluating many factors such as the age of the woman, her medical history, and number and quality of embryos. Embryo is usually transferred on the 2nd, 3rd, or the 5th day.
Embryo transfer is an easy process that does not required anesthesia; however some patients might choose a light sedation. Urine bag needs to be full during the process as transfer is performed under supervision with abdominal ultrasound. Therefore your urine bag must be full in other words you need a pee when you come for transfer process. Having ultrasound in transfer allows monitoring how catheter is passed along the uterus. The clinician initially visualizes the lower end of the womb, which is called cervix, using a vaginal instrument (speculum) and cleans the cervix with a warm liquid. In the meantime, the embryo(s) selected in the embryology laboratory are collected into a suitable media. The embryologist draws the embryos into the soft, long and thin silicone transfer catheter with an injector attached to the end, and prepares for the transfer. Clinician then passes the end of transfer catheter through cervix and places the embryos inside the uterus.
Your embryologist will provide you with detailed information about your embryos prior to process. A picture of your embryos will also be provided upon your request.
After transfer process, the patient is allowed to rest for 15-20 minutes then transferred to her room to allow her to get rest for around 1-2 hours. The patient will be explained the matters to be careful with by nurses then discharged which will end the test tube baby process. The patient will have to wait for 12 days when pregnancy test will be performed.
